Thrust bearings support the axial thrust of both horizontal and vertical shafts. The functions are to prevent the shaft from drifting in the axial direction and to transfer thrust loads applied on the shaft. These are most used in relatively slow movement application.

To reduce surface contact and friction across moving planes, bearings use balls to separate two “races,” or bearing rings.
Because of their configuration, they have a self-aligning feature. They have two rows of balls on the inner race and a common spherical surface on the outer race, the centre of which coincides with the centre of the bearing.
